Does snake repellent work?

My family and I have recently bought a house in high-desert. Soon after, we discovered that there is a wide population of Mohave Green rattlesnakes. I am worried because we have 3 dogs and 2 children, and they might get bit. We have already bought boots for the family in case they happen to come across a snake. Is there anything else we can do to keep snakes away? I heard that snakes dont like rocks, so i am thinking of putting gravel on the perimeter of the backyard and the front of the house (since we have a two and a half acre lot.) What can i do to prevent snakes? And does snake repellent work? Please help!
