Are there rattlesnakes in North Carolina?

I live in North Carolina. I found a solid black snake with a lighter underside It rattled it's tail as it slithered away. I don't know if there are any rattlesnakes in NC. I have heard of black snakes doing this too. If there are rattlesnakes in this area what breeds would look like I described.
