Brushy fields are good hunting areas, especially around farms. A good way to find large snakes is to cruise back roads just after dark, when the roads are still holding the heat; quite a few snakes like to come out and bask on the roads then, which is why they often end up as roadkill. That isn't seen much around where I live any more (fewer snakes), but maybe up in Michigan you can still find some. Rockpiles, boards and hollow logs or stacks of logs are all good places to look.
